Day 24 Eureka KOA to Burlington Park (46 miles)
The early starters Scott, his son Will & Yorkshire man Mike were pretty much packed, fed and ready to roll as I was just raising from my slumber. I know my speed will slow them so I let them know I would be getting to the same camp but a few hours later. The early part of the ride could easily of been from Willenhall to Cannock. Nothing but a main road with the odd town or shopping centre. Not much to inspire but then again Oregon had wet my beak a touch to much perhaps.
One notable landmark was Eureka's Carson Mansion with it's ornate architecture and luring paint scheme. I expected Grandpa Munster to walk out at any minute. The road continued to be long and uneventful to the extent that I contemplated photographing Roadkill to pass the time. Take your pick from Crows, Racoon, Deer or Chipmunk. If your struggling to find a 7eleven, McDonald's or Dennys then never mind the road offers many choices. I had last chance for groceries when I arrived at the town of Scotia. A nice setting with not just a shop but also a logging museum, library, theatre and hotel. I bought some food and treated myself to Juicy Fruit Starburst Gum. Don't worry girls of Lonestar Fasteners I will bring some back when I return.
The final part of the days ride took me into the Avenue of the Giants. It's quite dangerous to ride with your eyes looking up instead of forward but it's very difficult when the sights are 320ft high. I pulled over, took some photographs, read some of the trail side literature and gazed in wonder at the marvels of evolution known as Redwood Trees.
I pulled into camp and hooked up with Scott, Will & Mike. I showered, ate and chilled then went to see the in camp entertainment which tonight was a Native American Flute recital complete with Redwood history lesson. Did you know that every tree that gets over 800 years will have on average shed 1 billion seeds of which only 1 will grow to a similar size as it's parent.
