Doheny Beach to San Diego via San Elijo State Beach. 66 miles
Once I left Long Beach I gave myself two easy days to make it to San Diego. It was a beautiful ride along the coast but very busy as it's the height of summer and the schools are still out. I saw on the map a campsite on the beach called Doheny State Park so I headed there for my first night. It was only 30 miles away so it gave me a good part of the day to sunbathe. The campsite had a few other cyclists there including a retired couple from Ohio who always do a cycling trip each year. Night time had some fun and games as the local Raccoon crew made an appearance and bit a hole through the couples tent to get at their pannier's. They are resilient little critters when there is a smell of food in the area. The next day took me to San Elijo State Beach to another nice but busy campsite. This one was also a good stop off for cyclists. I met a guy from Hawaii who was riding an awesome touring bike called a Surly Disk Trucker. This beast is definitely on my bucket list for when I return home. On the way I cycled through Camp Pendleton Army Base. It was strange having to show my passport to get in. It was also a good job I had my helmet with me as it was one of the rules of entry that one had to be worn.
I made it to San Diego and my warmshower hosts where I had an awesome eveing watching the San Diego Padres on TV while not understanding a single thing about what was going on. Tomorrow my host is taking me to the border to get a photograph.
