San Diego to Mexican Border
My host in San Diego for 2 nights Is a member of a local cycling club which is perfect when your cycling down to the Mexican border. They always know the best, easiest and more often the flat routes. If your local then why go the hard ways? The ride down took about an hour in which we stopped off by the dockside to see the aircraft carrier moored in the harbour. I got some nice photographs but none actually show how enormous it actually is. How these things float is beyond me.
The border was so surreal, really busy with people crossing to go to work or visiting family. You can really see that the closer to the border you get the more the Mexican influence take hold of the neighbourhoods.
I managed to get close enough to get my photograph with the granite sign in the background saying "MEXICO"
Over dinner at back at the hosts house we talked about by trip so far and he was curious why I hadn't started at the Canadian border. To be honest I had never really thought about it to much but I had wanted to go to Astoria since watching the Goonies so had just decided to start there on the bicycle. While talking he got my senses raised about the state of Washington and it's beautiful forests, lakes and mountains. After looking at a few maps and checking the cost of a train ride along the coast I decided to go for it. The Canadian border back to Astoria was for me. I worked out I could do it in a few days, get back down to Portland to stay with Sarah then head back to Chicago on the Amtrak and get down to Dallas and beyond. Big change of plan but so worth it.
