Food glorious food

Food is a major part of a bicycle tour. Usually as I excerpt so much energy cycling I’m thinking about and looking forward to the next meal as I finish the current one. When touring there are certain foods that are pretty much in the bag constantly. Oats, powdered milk, tea bags, sweetener, BBQ sauce, whole grain wraps and pasta. Then you have the items that you add and usually eat within a couple of days. Cup’o soups, pasta sauce, muesli bars that are chopped up and added straight into the oats, fruit, vegetables, tuna, baked beans, yogurt, eggs and assorted beans like chick, cannoli or lentils. Australia has a few main stores that are in most decent towns. Woolworths, IGA, Coles, Aldi and Foodworks. Smaller town usually have a general store where naturally the prices increase.

A typical days food for me could be: Breakfast: Oats with a chopped up muesli bar and a chopped up banana added. When you add the hot water and teaspoon of powdered milk and mix it up it melts the muesli bar and turns the oats chocolate flavoured. So nice with a cup of tea. 10:30am Snack: Yogurt with a chopped up peach or apple. Lunch: Whole grain wrap with tuna, chick peas, some chopped pepper with either bbq or Piri Piri sauce and a cup of tea. Late afternoon snack: Carrot and baby cucumber sliced into fingers and a flavoured dip. Sun dried tomato is my favourite. Dinner: Boiled vegetables, usually broccoli or cauliflower, a handful of pasta, a small amount of chick peas all added to a sweet potato and pumpkin cup o’ soup with a cup of tea. At this point Norman usually gets out a couple of ginger snaps or custard creams as a treat. I banned myself from buying these kind of treats as it’s impossible for me to keep biscuits for a day without eating the whole packet. The same goes for nut and trail mix. Put that in my shopping bag and I’m usually eating it before I have left the store. Footnote: I’m writing this at 4:35am. I can’t sleep as I’m hungry but my food bag is by Norman’s tent. I have to put it there because if it’s in my tent I end up snacking all night.
